Work Portfolio
Hi SWA Friends! You asked for a few writing samples - and they are sprinkled throughout below - but I thought I’d offer some additional views of my work over the years. Please see below for selected highlights.
If you only have time to look at a couple of writing samples, take a look at this ghostwritten FB post, this all-teammate communication and this leader communication. These are all explained in more detail below!
Bridgestone Americas
From 2009-2015, I served in positions of increasing responsibility in corporate communications, including media relations, corporate social responsibility, business communications for the commercial division and internal/HR communications.
I supported Bridgestone Americas CEO Gary Garfield during my tenure, including crafting all teammate messaging, HR-related messaging and leader messaging , as well as writing scripts for internal video projects. The examples here aren’t necessarily standout in terms of prose, but they do represent the outcomes of partnering with a leader and working closely to match his tone and style.
I provided communications for our internal philanthropy projects, including plans and messaging for our annual United Way campaign. Our 2014 campaign was awarded Best Corporate Campaign by United Way of Metro Nashville.
I created our internal communications function from scratch, creating plans to scale the function while doing day-to-day communications. I also guided internal communications (along with agency support) for our major headquarters consolidation and relocation project in 2015.
First united methodist church dallas
I served as director of communications from 2018-2022, which included a full narrative rebrand for the large historic church that is a flagship location for the North Texas Conference. I led a full narrative rebrand in my first year, which served as the foundation for a full communications plan. In this plan, I took some liberties because the senior pastor was a “data and theory” person so I made sure to show those alignments in the linked deck.
The church was very engaged in social justice issues and routinely spoke out on related local happenings, including the case of Botham Jean and its ties to racism and criminal justice. The clergy was especially vocal on these topics from the pulpit. The day the verdict was scheduled to be delivered, I suggested to the pastor that he might want to comment. We talked about it as he ran to another meeting…maybe two minutes. I then ghostwrote this post for the pastor in about 30 minutes, got it approved and posted it. In reviewing it, he told me, “this sounds like I wrote it…it’s what I would’ve said.” The highest compliment for a comms person! It’s a small deliverable, but it does represent being in lockstep with a leader and providing what they need before they even consider it.
Northaven Church
I created a full rebrand and new communications strategy for a church in North Dallas that wanted to attempt to attract those who still held Christian beliefs but decided to leave the Church behind. They have a long history of social justice and activism and they wanted to play up that DNA in their external presence and messaging. I also storyboarded this video to show them what the narrative could look like in action (the video was cut together by a videographer.)
Springtide Research Institute
During my time at Springtide Research Institute, I was charged with taking our complex data sets and arranging them into narratives for mainstream audiences. I proposed a new blog strategy which over time produced double-digit gains in organic search. I oversaw execution and curation of the blog, writing a majority of the posts (including this one and this one). I also worked closely with marketing, including using a combination of psychology and personality systems to create audience personas to better target our specific audiences. To contribute to external visibility, I also ran a blog on Psychology Today that’s received over 50,000 views, presented at conferences and served as a guest on podcasts.
