Welcome to God In Our Newsfeed!
Religion has long been a cultural and social artifact – but what is religion’s presence in a world connected by technologies that redefine both notions of place, purpose and hierarchy? This course attempts to explore the collisions of religion and spirituality, psychology and media to better understand what religion and spirituality look like in the 21st century, and how media affects how we develop, think about and consume those properties.
As humans, we are constantly evolving, and our religious and spiritual lives are no exception. You’ll see in this class that what we believe and how we practice (or don’t believe and don’t practice) in inextricably tied to our experience in this world, and our relationship to our spirituality ebbs and flows as we age (and we live life). Therefore, I treat this class not as an exercise in lectures, but instead a platform for conversation and critical thinking. In completing the work, I invite you not to just comprehend the readings, but actually examine your own life, how you’ve come to believe what you believe, and what you know about religion and spirituality. My hope is, at the end of 12 weeks, you’ll emerge with a new set of insights to keep you evolving both personally and professionally.
